  • It is a women’s Empowerment and Livelihoods Programme in the Mid Gangetic Plains.
  • The project provides training for women to become self-sufficient and start Self Help Groups.
  • The programme targets to cover over 1,00,000 households and form 7,200 SHGs.
  • The focus of the project is on livelihood enhancement; the beneficiaries will be empowered to address their political, legal, and health problems through rigorous capacity building.
  • The programme had been started with assistance from NABARD.

Priyadarshini Scheme provides an Empowerment scheme for women in the mid-gangetic region in general.

Current Status of Priyadarshini Scheme

  • The program was closed in 2015.
  • The scheme was implemented in seven districts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
  • As per the reports from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, it did not improve the condition of women who were the actual target.
Why Priyadarshini Scheme scheme was shut down?

  • The performance of the scheme was not good as expected. 
  • No work was done on the ground while the scheme assessed and spent 31 crore. 
  • The chosen NGO’s were don’t have the ability to work on the ground.
  • It was a scheme just benefiting the NGO’s and not giving support for the cause of women.
Other Schemes for Women’s Empowerment

  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme
    • To ensure the survival, safety, and education of girls, the Indian Prime Minister inaugurated this project on January 22, 2015, in Haryana.
    • The effort aims to address the recent sex disparity, increase social awareness, and enhance the efficiency of welfare benefits for girls.
  • One-Stop Centre Scheme
    • Aid women who have experienced abuse in both public and private settings.
    • Offer a variety of services, such as counselling, legal, medical, and legal assistance, all under one roof.
    • Both urgent and emergency help should be provided, as well as ongoing aid.
    • Strive to end all types of abuse against women.
  • Support for the Training and Employment Program for Women
    • STEP system is a Central Sector Scheme.
    • It underwent modification in December 2014.
    • It was created to provide women with training in skill development and job stability.
    • This government-sponsored program gives financing to institutions and groups so they may offer training courses to women.
  • Ujjwala Scheme
    • The launch of this program was in December 2007.
    • The Indian government has put in place a comprehensive plan to combat trafficking as well as to find, care for, and rehabilitate survivors of human trafficking who have been sexually exploited.
    • The program is mostly being carried out by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to directly assist and benefit those who have been the victims of human trafficking.
Do Not Confuse with Priyadarshini Awas Yojana

  • It is a scheme for building houses in the rural region
  • Amount will be provided to identified poor people in the region through Panchayath.
  • More than 1.5 Lakh beneficiaries are identified 
  • The amount is transferred in three instalment and will receive a total of 93000 as benefit.
  • The household includes toilet.
  • This scheme is some what same as the Indira Awas Yojana.
  • It is aimed to provide amount to two lakh identified rural poor for affordable house.
