India and Nepal over Buddha birth

Why in News?

Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu asserted that Nepal is the land of origin of Lord Buddha. It was just after  India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the founder of Buddhism as one of the greatest Indians ever.

Buddha’s birthplace

Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini on the northern edge of the Ganges River basin.

  • Lumbini is one of the holiest places of one of the world’s great religions
  • Its remains contain important evidence about the nature of Buddhist pilgrimage centres from as early as the 3rd century BC.
