United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been helping make the world safer from drugs, organized crime, corruption and terrorism.

  • The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime was founded in 1997.

  • It is the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention by merging the United Nations International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) with the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Division of the United Nations Office in Vienna.
  • In 2002, it was renamed the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
  • The agency’s main priorities include drug trafficking and abuse, crime prevention and criminal justice, international terrorism, and political corruption. It belongs to the United Nations Development Group.
  • It has an estimated biennial budget of US$700 million in 2016-2017.
  • it offers practical assistance and encourages transnational approaches to action.
  • It does this in all regions of the world through various global programmes and a network of field offices.
  • Committed to supporting the Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its core.
  • Funding
    • Voluntary contributions from the Member States, multilateral organizations, the private sector and other sources comprise the bulk of UNODC funding in support of UNODC mandate areas associated with drug control and crime prevention.
    • Voluntary contributions are primarily from the Members States and are primarily earmarked through global programmes and regional/country programmes or specific UNODC mandate areas.
  • On 26 June, UNODC launches campaigns to raise awareness of drugs and crime problems.
  • UNODC marks the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
  • 9 December every year UNODC commemorates International Anti-Corruption Day and the current theme is “United against Corruption”.
