Why in News ?

The Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report is the U.S. Government’s principal diplomatic tool to engage foreign governments on human trafficking.

  • It is also the world’s most comprehensive resource of governmental anti-trafficking efforts and reflects the U.S. Government’s commitment to global leadership on this key human rights and law enforcement issue.
Key Facts

  • This year’s Trafficking in Persons Report released during  the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and enduring discriminatory policies and practices and all have a disproportionate effect on individuals already oppressed by other injustices.
  • These challenges further compound existing vulnerabilities to exploitation, including human trafficking. 
  • Inequities undercut goal of combating human trafficking and embolden traffickers.
  • It manifests in societal exclusion and prejudices against those communities, which help perpetuate an imbalance of opportunity and support.
  • Situation in India
    • India has demonstrated “overall increasing efforts compared to the previous reporting period.
    • India does not fully meet the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking but is making significant efforts in identifying more victims and investigating and prosecuting more trafficking cases.

Excess water flowing to Pakistan to be be stopped and divert for irrigating its own land under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960.

Key Facts

  • India’s plans to fully utilize its share of water under the treaty.
  • Also the strategic importance against the backdrop of China developing the controversial China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in the region.
  • Currently three rivers of the Indus system there flowing water remains untapped because of geographical adversities and flows into Pakistan.
  • India is working on stage two of the plan for its diversion and preparing its Detailed Project Report.
  • What is the challenge to divert?
    • Ravi river enters and exits Pakistan’s territory 17 times.
    • It crisscrosses  at most of the places Ravi is the line of division between the two countries and make it difficult to tap the benefits.
What is Indus Treaty 1960

  • Indus Waters Treaty, treaty, signed on September 19, 1960 between India and Pakistan with the supervision of World Bank.
  • The treaty fixed and delimited the rights and obligations of both countries concerning the use of the waters of the Indus River system.
