Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, Shri Piyush Goyal inaugurated 250mm Seer Water supply scheme

Key Facts

  • The project will benefit around 10000 people and will be completed under the ambit of Jal Jeevan Mission within three months.

  • Other Initiatives
    • Union minister inaugurated tourist hut of Pahalgam Development Authority at Golf Course Pahalgam.
    • Visited Rahi Shawl Unit located at Akad Park.
      • Interacted with the local artisans and examined various handicrafts like zari, sozni, tapestry, etc. 
    • Union Minister also visited the Sun temple at Martand.
About Sun temple at Martand

  • Also known as Pandou Laidan in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • It is a Hindu temple dedicated to Surya and built during the 8th century CE.
  • Martand Sun Temple was built by the third ruler of the Karkota Dynasty, Lalitaditya Muktapida, in the 8th century CE.
  • Martand is another Sanskrit synonym for Surya.
  • It is now in ruins, as it was destroyed by the orders of Muslim ruler Sikandar Shah Miri.
  • The temple was built on top of a plateau from where one can view the whole of the Kashmir Valley.
  • Archaeological Survey of India has also declared the Martand Sun Temple as a site of national importance in Jammu and Kashmir.
Karkota Dynasty (c. 625 – 855 CE)

  • Karkota Dynasty  ruled over the Kashmir valley and some northern parts of the Indian subcontinent during 7th and 8th century. 
  • Karkota rulers were Vaishnavas and constructed several Vishnu shrines in their dominions.
  • Avanti Varman ascended the throne of Kashmir in 855 A.D., establishing the Utpala dynasty and ending the rule of Karkota dynasty.
  • The Nilamata Purana (Kashmir Mahatmya), believed to have been commissioned by Durlabhavardhana — the first ruler of the dynasty.
