Why in News ?
India adds 10 more wetlands designated as Ramsar sites to make total 64 sites covering an area of 12,50,361 ha in the country.
Key Facts

The 10 new sites include: 
  1.  Six sites in Tamil Nadu
    10 Ramsar Sites Added Makes 64 sites
    Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve
  2. One each in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha.
  • Designation of these sites would help in conservation and management of wetlands and wise use of their resources.
  • India is one of the Contracting Parties to Ramsar Convention, signed in Ramsar.
  • Iran, in 1971.
  • India signed it on 1st Feb 1982.
  • So far 64 wetlands covering an area of 12,50,361 ha have been designated as Ramsar Sites of International Importance from India, till date.

  • Total area of 64 Ramsar Sites in India after designation of 10 more sites as above is 12,50,361 
Ramsar Convention on Wetlands
    • An international treaty, aims at the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands.
    • Convention named after the city of Ramsar in Iran.
    • Also known as the Convention on Wetlands
    • This was signed in 1971.
    • February 2 is World Wetlands Day  (WWD)marking the convention’s adoption on 2 February 1971.
      • Aims to raise awareness about the value of wetlands for humanity and the planet WWD was celebrated for the first time in 1997.
    • The list of wetlands of international importance covering over 2.1 million square kilometres.

State University Research Excellence (SERB-SURE) is a new innovative scheme of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB).
Key Facts

  • State University Research Excellence (SERB-SURE) is a new innovative scheme of the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), a statutory body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).

  • It can foster collaboration for high-end research at state and private universities and colleges.
  • Scheme will help bring the university system, which was so far mostly limited to teaching, into mainstream research and enable the young faculty there to participate in cutting-edge research.
  • It also support data-driven social science research, would be a great stimulus to the latent potential that lies in our universities.
  • Faculties of state universities (45% in rural areas), would get opportunities for research, as a part of this scheme.
  • State universities will have level competition to secure research funding, and present significant opportunities for strengthening of research ecosystem in state universities to upgrade their research capabilities to national and international levels.
  • The growth of existing research capabilities at these institutions is imperative to ensure horizontal diffusion of research excellence reaching all research students hoping to contribute to national R&D ecosystem, to propagate scientific temper and promoting enhancement of quality through SERB support.
  • They would also provide opportunities to strengthen research ecosystem across state universities, in order to upgrade research capabilities to national and international levels.
Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB):
  • SERB is a statutory body, working under Department of Science and Technology.
  • It was set up in 2009, through SERB ACT, 2008.
  • It is chaired by Secretary to Government of India in Department of Science and Technology.
  • It was set up to promote basic research in science and engineering as well as to give financial assistance to scientists, academic institutions, industrial concerns and R&D laboratories.
