International Monetary Fund (IMF) released the latest edition of World Economic Outlook 2022.

Global Forecast

  • Global growth is forecast to slow from 6% in 2021 to 3.2% in 2022 and 2.7% in 2023.World Economic Outlook 2022
  • The global growth is expected to slow further in 2023.
  • Global inflation is forecast to rise from 4.7% in 2021 to 8.8% in 2022.
  • More energy and food price shocks might cause inflation to persist for longer while.
  • China’s growth is estimated to slow to 3.2% in 2022 and by 4.4% in 2023.
  • 19th largest economy, Saudi Arabia, is now estimated to grow faster than India at 7.6% in 2022 and by 3.7% in 2023.

India’s economic growth forecast

  • Sharply lowered India’s economic growth forecast to 6.8%.
  • India will remain one of the fastest growing key economies in the world in 2022 and 2023.
  • India’s retail inflation has been hovering at record levels of 7%

World Bank last week lowered India’s growth forecast to 6.5% for 2022-23, while the Asian Development Bank and the Reserve Bank of India cut the projection to 7%.

About the report

  • It is a survey by the IMF that is usually published twice a year in the months of April and October.
  • Analyzes and predicts global economic developments during the near and medium term.
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
  • IMF, was conceived at a UN conference in Bretton Woods in July 1944.
  • The 44 countries at that conference sought to build a framework for economic cooperation to avoid a repetition of the competitive devaluations that had contributed to the Great Depression of the 1930s.
  • With the membership of 189 countries, the Fund’s mandate was updated in 2012 to include all macroeconomic and financial sector issues that bear on global stability.
  • Unlike development banks, the IMF does not lend for specific projects.
  • Gold remains an important asset in the reserve holdings of several countries, and the IMF is still one of the world‘s largest official holders of gold.

Why in News ?

INS Tarkash reached Port Gqeberha (also known as Port Elizabeth), South Africa to participate in the seventh edition of IBSAMAR, a joint multinational maritime exercise among Indian, Brazilian and South African Navies from 10 – 12 Oct 22.

About IBSAMAR

  • The previous edition of IBSAMAR (IBSAMAR VI) was conducted off Simons Town, South Africa from 01 to 13 Oct 18.

  • The Indian Navy is represented by the Teg class guided missile frigate, INS Tarkash, a Chetak helicopter and the personnel from the Marine Commando Force (MARCOS).
  • The harbour phase of IBSAMAR VII includes professional exchanges such as damage control and fire-fighting drills, VBSS/cross boarding lectures and interaction among special forces.
  • The Joint Maritime Exercise will strengthen maritime security, joint operational training, sharing of best practices and building interoperability to address common maritime threats.

  • Helps in constructive engagements in operational terms and enhances the skills of our armed forces.

PM has inaugurated the second United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) in Hyderabad.

About UNWGIC?


  • The UNWGIC is organised every four years by the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM).
  • Aims to enhance worldwide collaboration in the management and capacities of geospatial information between Member States and relevant stakeholders.
  • First United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress held in Deqing, Zhejiang Province, China from 19 to 21 November 2018.
  • Theme of UNWGIC 2022 is ‘Geo-Enabling the Global Village: No one should be left behind’.

  • Five-day conference is being hosted by the Department of Science & Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology and convened by

  • It will discuss how crucial integrated geospatial information infrastructure and knowledge services are to advancing the accomplishment and oversight of sustainable development objectives.

  • It also emphasises on the importance of international cooperation and coordination in the development of human data-linked to geography.
  • The event involves the participation of over 2,000 delegates from over 120 countries across the world.

Why in News ?

The Karur and Dindigul districts in Tamil Nadu have been designated as the first Indian Slender Loris refuge under Section 26 (A)(1)(b) of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Key Facts

  • To create the Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary, the first of its kind in India, the forest lands of the Karur and Dindigul districts would be combined, totaling 11,806 hectares.
  • This move by the TN government will protect the mammal’s habitat and also help in reducing its poaching.

About Slender Loris

  • According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Slender Loris is a species that is considered to be endangered (IUCN).
  • The improvement of the species’ habitat, conservation initiatives, and threat reduction are all necessary for its existence.
  • A little, nocturnal mammal called the slender loris spends the most of its time on trees.
  • They assist farmers by acting as biological predators of pests that damage agricultural crops.
  • The species is significant and plays a variety of ecological roles in the terrestrial ecosystem.
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972

  • It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir.Kadavur Slender Loris sanctuary
  • It prohibits the hunting of any wild animal specified in Schedules I, II, III and IV of the act.
  • It forbids the removal, harm, collection, ownership, or sale of any particular plant from any protected area or forest property.
  • Central Government can constitute any area as a Sanctuary, provided the area is of adequate ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, natural or zoological significance.

Various Bodies under the act

  • As per the act, the central government of India shall constitute the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL).
  • For the aim of certifying all projects that are located inside or within 10 kilometres of protected wildlife regions, BWL establishes a Standing Committee.
  • State governments are responsible for the constitution of the state board of wildlife.
  • Act provides for the constitution of Central Zoo Authority consisting of a total 10 members including the Chairperson and a Member-Secretary.
  • The act provided for the constitution of Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) to combat organized wildlife crime in the country.

About Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)

  • Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme Aims
    • Challenging mindsets and deep rooted patriarchy in the societal system
    • Strict enforcement of PC&PNDT Act
    • Advancing education of the girl child
    • Focus on issues of women empowerment on a life cycle continuum
  • Initiative of MoWCD, MoHFW and Ministry of Education).
  • It is not a DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) scheme.
  • Launched in January, 2015 at Panipat in Haryana.
  • The Scheme aims to reduce the child sex ratio.

Non-Traditional Livelihoods (NTL) : NLT are organizations and occupations where women’s involvement is and has historically been absent or very low.

Initiatives to Support Girl Children

  • Sukanya Samridhi Yojana : Parents of girls are the target audience for a savings programme endorsed by the Indian government.
  • National Girl Child Day : National Girl Child Day is celebrated in India every year on January 24.
  • National Scheme of Incentive to Girls for Secondary Education : To promote enrolment of girl child in the age group of 14-18 at secondary stage
  • Scheme for Adolescent Girls : Providing a supportive environment for self-development during the age of 11-14.
