Why in News ?
The K9-Vajra tracked self-propelled howitzers are made in India by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) utilising technology that was imported from South Korean defence giant Hanwha Defense Co. Ltd.
Key Facts
- The Defense Ministry has begun the purchase procedure for 100 additional of these weapons.
- In November, the Defence Ministry sent L&T a request for proposals.
Background
- In 2020 eastern Ladakh were under the threat of Chinese Military the Army sent out a regiment of these howitzers to increase its long-range firepower at Line of Actual Control.
- Artillery firepower on the northern borders was successful during this period.
- As a result by their success the Army is considering ultimately acquiring 200 more weapons.
What is K9-Vajras Tracked Self-Propelled Howitzer ?
- K9 howitzers operate in groups with the K10 automatic ammunition resupply vehicle variant.

- The K9-Vajra is a 155-mm, 52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzer based on the K9 Thunder
- It has an operational range of 360 km.
- The K9 is of welded construction, using 20,000 kilograms (44,000 lb) of MIL-12560H armor steel.
- The K9 has both manual (mechanical and optical) and automatic (electronic) fire control system.
- Assisted by a semi-automatic feeding system, fire control system, and the Battalion Tactical Command System (BTCS), the vehicle can burst fire three rounds in 15 seconds.
- After firing, it can relocate to a new position in 30 seconds, to increase survivability from enemy counter-battery attacks.
- In May 2021, the K9 Vajra-T was deployed to the Ladakh region during territorial tensions between China and India.
