Why in News ?

the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India envisages to celebrate the World Environment Day 2023 with a thrust on the Mission LiFE.

Key Facts

  • World Turtle Day, NCSCM partnered with the members of the sea turtle hatchery at Besant Nagar under the Tamil Nadu Forest Department on mass mobilisation of the Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) movement
    • Aims to spread public awareness and educate coastal fishermen and the local community on the need for sea turtle conservation.
    • More than 300 species of turtles exist on the planet.

About World Turtle Day

  • World Turtle Day is an annual observance held every May 23rd.
  • It began in 2000 and is sponsored by American Tortoise Rescue.
  • World Turtle Day is promoted by dressing up as turtles, wearing green summer dresses, saving turtles caught on highways, research activities, and adopting turtles or tortoises from rehabilitation centers.

About Turtle

  • Turtles are an order of reptiles known as Testudines, characterized by a special shell developed mainly from their ribs.
  • There are 360 living and recently extinct species of turtles.
  • Turtles are the only reptiles that migrate long distances, more specifically the marine species that can travel up to thousands of kilometers.
  • 360 modern species have existed since 1500 AD of these, 51–56% are considered threatened and 60% considered threatened or extinct.
