Why in News ?

Members of the Kodava community, in the hill district of Kodagu, are demanding exclusive, intangible constituencies in Parliament and the Karnataka Assembly on the lines of the Sangha virtual constituency for the Buddhist monastic community in Sikkim.

Characteristics and aspects of the Kodava community

    Karnataka. Kodagu is known for its scenic beauty, coffee plantations, and distinct culture.

  • Language: The Kodava language, Kodava Takk, is an important part of their identity. It is an oral language that uses a unique script called “Kannada Script.”
  • Traditional Occupation: Historically, the Kodavas were known for their association with agriculture and coffee plantations. They have a strong tradition of martial skills and were known for their bravery and loyalty, which led to their involvement in the military services of various rulers.
  • Religion and Festivals: The Kodavas follow a mix of Hinduism and their unique cultural practices. They have their own religious rituals and festivals, with “Kailpodh” being one of the most important and celebrated festivals.
  • Kodava Culture and Traditions: The Kodava community has a rich cultural heritage that includes unique dance forms like “Kodava Kolata” and distinctive rituals and ceremonies associated with various life events.
  • Kaveri River Worship: The Kaveri River holds significant importance for the Kodavas, and they have a tradition of worshiping the river and offering prayers during certain occasions.
  • Kodava Dress: The traditional Kodava dress is distinctive and includes attire like “Kupya” for men and “Sari” for women, adorned with various accessories.
  • Kodava Clan System: The Kodavas have a well-organized clan system, and members of the same clan, known as “Okka,” consider themselves to be descendants of a common ancestor.

Sangha Virtual Constituency

  • Sangha is the collective name for all Sikkim-based Buddhist monks and nuns, regardless of where they live in the state.
  • They are all listed as Sangha voters, not as residents of the region where they reside.
  • The Sikkim Buddhist monastic community, including Buddhist nuns and monks, are only permitted in this constituency.
