Why in News ?
Violence broke out in the Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam, leaving one woman, Rahima Khatun, dead and six others wounded, including three forest rangers.
News in Brief
- According to the forest department, people who had been kicked out in February allegedly tried to relocate there.
- The conflict between the two groups intensified on Monday when a team from the forest department headed by Divisional Forest Officer of Nagaon Wildlife, Jayanta Deka, arrived at the scene.
- Forester and two home guards were injured.
About Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary
- It is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam on the river Brahmaputra’s southern bank.
- The Laokhowa-Burachapori eco-system includes it.
- It is made up of a patchwork of riparian and semi-evergreen woods, wetland and river systems, and wet alluvial grassland.
- There are many different kinds of medicinal plants and herbs abundant in the grassland.
- The Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, tigers, leopards, wild buffalo, hog deer, wild pigs, and elephants call this region home.
- There is also the critically endangered Bengal Florican there.
- Bird list also includes the Black-necked Stork, Mallard, Open billed Stork, Teal, and Whistling Duck among others.
- It also makes it the perfect location for various species of migrating birds to reproduce throughout the winter.
