  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is a government ministry of India responsible for formulating and implementing policies and programs related to electronics, information technology, and the promotion of the digital economy.
  • It was created in 2016 by merging the former Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

Key functions and responsibilities


  1. Information Technology (IT) Policy Formulation: MeitY formulates policies and strategies to promote the growth and development of the information technology sector in India. This includes initiatives to foster innovation, support startups, and improve the overall digital ecosystem.
  2. Digital India Initiative: The ministry spearheads the Digital India program, which aims to transform India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. It focuses on improving digital infrastructure, digital literacy, and digital delivery of government services.
  3. e-Governance and Digital Services: MeitY is responsible for promoting and facilitating the implementation of e-Governance initiatives at the central and state government levels. It aims to make government services more accessible, efficient, and transparent through digital platforms.
  4. Promotion of Electronics Manufacturing: The ministry works to boost domestic electronics manufacturing and reduce import dependence. It implements policies and incentives to attract investments in the electronics manufacturing sector.
  5. Cybersecurity and Data Protection: MeitY takes measures to enhance cybersecurity and protect critical information infrastructure from cyber threats. It also plays a role in formulating data protection and privacy policies.
  6. Digital Infrastructure Development: The ministry focuses on the development of digital infrastructure, including broadband connectivity, internet penetration, and digital literacy programs.
  7. Promotion of IT and IT-enabled Services: MeitY supports the growth of IT and IT-enabled services industries, which have contributed significantly to India’s economy and employment generation.
  8. International Cooperation: The ministry engages in international cooperation and collaboration on information technology, telecommunications, and digital initiatives with other countries and international organizations.
  9. Standardization and Quality Control: MeitY works on setting standards and quality control measures for electronic products and services to ensure their safety and reliability.
