News in Brief
- The Lander Module (LM) of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) third lunar mission Chandrayaan-3, launched on July 14, made a successful landing on the Moon’s surface on August 23.
- This made India only the fourth country after the erstwhile USSR, the U.S. and China to make a soft landing on the lunar surface.
- Lander will deploy the Rover which will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course of its mobility.
- The Lander and the Rover with a mission life of one Lunar day is 14 Earth days have scientific payloads to carry out experiments on the lunar surface.
Chandrayaan 3 Explained
Objective of Chandrayaan-3
- To show Safe and Soft Landing on the Surface of the Moon
- To showcase roaming lunar rover technology
- To carry out in-situ scientific research.
- Several cutting-edge technologies are required and demostrated accomplish the mission’s goals.
Payload
- The Chandrayaan-3 payload consists of the following instruments
- Terrain Mapping Camera-2 (TMC-2): This instrument will map the lunar surface in high resolution.
- Lunar Laser Range Finder (LLRF): This instrument will measure the distance between the lander and the lunar surface.
- Chandrayaan-3 Surface Experiment Package (Chandrayaan-3 SEP): This package consists of several instruments that will study the lunar surface.
Scientific benefits
- The Chandrayaan-3 mission is expected to make significant scientific contributions to our understanding of the Moon.
- The mission will help to
- Characterize the lunar south pole, which is a region that is thought to be rich in water ice.
- Study the geology and mineralogy of the lunar surface.
- Understand the lunar atmosphere.
- Investigate the potential for future human exploration of the Moon
- Chandrayaan-3 is a challenging mission, but India has the experience and expertise to make it a success.
- Will help to further India’s reputation as a leading spacefaring nation.
