Why in the News?

Intensified Mission Indradhanush 5.0 (IMI 5.0) campaign with special focus on improvement of Measles and Rubella vaccination coverage, will conclude all three rounds on 14 October 2023

News in Brief

• As on 30th September 2023, over 34,69,705 children and 6,55,480 pregnant women were administered vaccine doses during the first 2 rounds of IMI 5.0 campaign across the country.
• A National Workshop on IMI 5.0 was conducted by on 23rd June 2023 at National Capital to orient all States/UTs about the campaign.
• Operational Guidelines along with Communication Strategy was shared with all States/ UTs.
• Since 2014, 11 phases of Mission Indradhanush have been completed across the country.
  • The 12th phase is currently ongoing.
  • A total of 5.06 crore children and 1.25 crore pregnant women have been cumulatively vaccinated to date under the campaign.

Intensified Mission Indradhanush (IMI 5.0)

• Flagship routine immunization campaign of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will conclude all 3 rounds on 14th October 2023.
• IMI 5.0 ensures that routine immunization services reach the missed-out and dropped out children and pregnant women across the country.
• This year, for the first time the campaign is being conducted across all the districts in the country and includes children up to 5 years of age (Previous campaigns included children up to 2 years of age).
• IMI 5.0 campaign aims to enhance immunization coverage for all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) as per the National Immunization Schedule (NIS).
• Special focus is on improvement of Measles and Rubella vaccination coverage with the aim of Measles & Rubella elimination by 2023 and use of U-WIN digital platform for Routine Immunization in pilot mode across all districts in the country.

NTPC shines as the only Indian PSU to feature in Forbes “World’s Best Employers 2023” List.

News in Brief

• India’s largest integrated energy conglomerate, NTPC Limited, has been recognized as one of the “World’s Best Employers 2023” in the Forbes World’s Best Employers list 2023 released on 10th Oct 2023.
• It ranked 261st out of top 700 companies in the World ranking and is the only Indian PSU to figure in the list.
• This is a testimony that the people practices at NTPC are at par with the top companies in the world.
• Samsung Electronics and Microsoft led the list at No. 1 and No. 2. Following Alphabet at No. 3, were Apple (No. 4) and Ferrari (No. 5).

World’s Best Employers 2023 List

• Every year Forbes publishes the World’s Best Employers List through independent market research.
• It aims to identify the top 700 companies which offer exciting working and a positive environment, opportunities for training and career advancement, employee benefits, and employee-centric and workplace diversity.
• Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to create the seventh annual list of the World’s Best Employers this year.
• How is the Survey done?
  • Respondents were asked
    • Whether they would recommend their company to family or friends
    • Rate their employer based on criteria such as working environment and hours, health benefits, opportunities for training and advancement, salary and workplace diversity.
  • Participants also could rate companies within their own industries and countries.
  • Responses were combined into a score, and the 700 companies with the highest scores made the final list.

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC)

The National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) is one of India’s largest and most prominent state-owned power companies. Established in 1975, NTPC plays a critical role in the Indian power generation sector. Here are some key points about NTPC:

• Foundation
  • NTPC was founded in 1975 and is headquartered in New Delhi, India.
• Primary Function
  • NTPC is primarily involved in the generation and distribution of electricity.
  • It plays a pivotal role in supplying power to various states and Union territories in India.
• Generation Capacity
  • NTPC is one of the largest power generation companies in India, with a diverse portfolio of thermal, gas, hydro, and renewable energy power plants.
  • As on September 2021, NTPC had a total installed capacity of over 66,000 megawatts (MW).
  • This capacity has likely increased since then, given NTPC’s ongoing expansion efforts.
• Projects
  • NTPC is involved in the development and operation of power projects across India.
  • Some of its projects include thermal power plants, coal-based power plants, gas-based power plants, and renewable energy projects.
  • The company has also been actively working on reducing its carbon footprint and increasing the share of renewable energy in its portfolio.
• International Presence
  • NTPC has also expanded its operations internationally and has invested in power projects in other countries.
• Government Ownership
  • NTPC is a government-owned company and is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

Why in the News?

The 21st National Maritime Search and Rescue (NMSAR) Board meeting was held at Kolkata.

• The meeting was chaired by Director General Rakesh Pal, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) in his capacity as Chairman , NMSAR Board. ICG is the coordinating and executing agency for Maritime Search and Rescue in Indian Search and Rescue Region (ISRR).

News in Brief

• The meeting was attended by representatives from stakeholders and resource agencies including Navy, Indian Air Force, ISRO, Customs, Coastal Police, DGCA, AAI, SCI, IMD, Fisheries, DG Shipping , Maritime boards, Port authorities, coastal States/UTs and other agencies, which are NMSAR Board members.
• During the meeting, National Search and Rescue (SAR) awards for the year 2022-23 were also presented.
  • The United Kingdom Flag vessel MV Furious was awarded in the merchant vessel category.
  • Indian Fishing Boat New Aparajita from West Bengal was awarded in the fishing boat category.
  • ICG Ship Sujeet & ICG Air Squardon 835 Sqn(CG) in Govt owned SAR unit category.
  • Gujrat Maritime Board and INMCC received the award in the ashore unit category.

About National Maritime Search and Rescue Board (NMSAR)

• The NMSAR Board was formed in 2002 and since the Board meeting is being held annually
• To discuss policy issues, formulate guidelines/ procedures and consider recommendations for reviewing the National Search and Rescue plan.
• Senior dignitaries and special invitees from BSF, CISF and Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) also attended the meeting.
• Various presentations and interactive sessions focussing on the collective common objective of the Safety of Lives at Sea were discussed.
