Why in the News?

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare and Tribal Affairs inaugurated the ASEAN-India Millet Festival.

News in Brief

  • Policymakers, entrepreneurs, expert startups and officials from ASEAN countries including India are participating in this two-day festival organized by the Indian Mission in ASEAN in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
  • The festival will conclude on 15th December 2023.
ASEAN-India Millet Festival 2023

  • A collaborative effort between the Indian Mission to ASEAN and the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, has taken centre stage in Indonesia from November 22 to 26.
  • This festival raises awareness about millet, promotes culinary diversity, and fosters sustainable agriculture.
  • The session featured a Millet-centric exhibition with active participation from Millet-based Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), start-ups, and Indian chefs.
  • The participating countries include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
ASEAN

  • ASEAN stands for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a regional intergovernmental organization comprising ten countries in Southeast Asia.
  • ASEAN was founded on August 8, 1967, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration, also known as the Bangkok Declaration.
  • The founding members are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.
  • The primary objectives of ASEAN are to promote regional cooperation and stability, economic growth, social progress, and cultural development among its member states.
  • Over the years, ASEAN has played a significant role in fostering political and economic integration in Southeast Asia.

The ten member states of ASEAN are

      1. Brunei
      2. Cambodia
      3. Indonesia
      4. Laos
      5. Malaysia
      6. Myanmar (Burma)
      7. the Philippines
      8. Singapore
      9. Thailand
      10. Vietnam
  • ASEAN operates on the principles of non-interference in the internal affairs of member states, consensus-building, and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
  • The organization has established various institutions and mechanisms for collaboration, including the ASEAN Summit, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA).
  • ASEAN has played a crucial role in promoting regional stability and economic development, and it continues to address various challenges facing the region, such as territorial disputes, economic disparities, and social issues.
  • Additionally, ASEAN engages in dialogue and cooperation with external partners to enhance regional peace and prosperity.
