Why in News?
Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai has been nominated as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).
News in Brief
- Supreme Court judge Justice BR Gavai has been nominated as the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC), replacing Justice Sanjiv Khanna – the seniormost judge of the top court after the Chief Justice of India (CJI).
- A notification issued by the Department of Justice on December 29, 2023, announced Justice Gavai’s nomination.
Supreme Court Legal Services Committee
- The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee was constituted under Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987
- It aims to provide free and competent legal services to the weaker sections of society in cases falling under the top court’s jurisdiction.
- According to Section 3A of the Act, the committee would be composed of the Central Authority, also known as the National Legal Services Authority, or NALSA.
- It is chaired by a current Supreme Court judge and comprised of additional members who meet the Center’s requirements for experience and credentials.
- The CJI will nominate the chairman and other members.
- Additionally, the Secretary may be appointed to the Committee by the CJI.
Composition
- Consists of nine members chosen by the CJI and chairperson BR Gavai.
- The Committee, after consulting with the CJI, may choose officers and other staff members as directed by the Center.
- In addition, the SCLSC members’ numbers, backgrounds, and qualifications are specified in Rule 10 of the NALSA Rules, 1995.
- By Section 27 of the 1987 Act, the Center may issue regulations by notification to implement the Act’s provisions after consulting with the CJI.
Legal Services Authorities Act
- The Legal Services Authorities Act was passed in 1987 to provide legal aid programs with a formal foundation.
- It seeks to offer qualified and cost-free legal services to qualified populations, such as women, kids, members of the SC/ST and EWS categories, industrial workers, people with disabilities, and others.
- NALSA was established in 1995 in accordance with the Act to oversee and assess the execution of legal aid programs and to establish guidelines for providing legal services.
- The Act envisions a national network for the provision of legal aid and support.
- Additionally, it gives money and grants to NGOs and State Legal Services Authorities so they may run legal aid programs and schemes.
- In every state, State Legal Services Authorities (SLSA) were established to implement NALSA’s policies and directions.
- SLSA is headed by the Chief Justice of the respective High Court.
- Senior HC judge as its Executive Chairman.
- District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) and Taluk Legal Services Committees also established.
- DLSA is chaired by the District Judge of the respective district.
- Taluka or Sub-Divisional Legal Services Committees are headed by a senior civil judge.

News in Brief
- the day-wise program plan includes yoga, mindfulness, and meditation workshops, followed by experiential learning, thematic seminars, and hands-on learning activities.
- Evening activities consist of visits to ancient and heritage locations, inspirational film screenings, creative activities reflecting mission life, talent displays, etc., providing a comprehensive learning approach.
- To participate, students can register on the official website.
About PRERANA Program
- It is a week-long residential program for selected students of class IX to XII.
- It is an experiential and inspirational learning program for students with the best-in-class technology where heritage meets innovation.
- A batch of 20 selected students (10 boys and 10 girls) will attend the program every week from various parts of the country.
- It will run from a Vernacular School, established in 1888, in one of the oldest living cities of India, Vadnagar, district Mehsana, Gujarat.
- It will feature yoga, mindfulness, and meditation sessions, followed by experiential learning, thematic sessions, and hands-on interesting learning activities.
- Themes
- Swabhiman and Vinay,Shaurya and Sahas,Parishram and Samarpan,Karuna and Sewa,Vividhta and Ekta,Satyanishtha and Shuchita,Navachar and Jigyasa,Shraddha and Vishwas, Swatantrata and Kartavya
- The Prerana school follows a syllabus based on nine value-based topics prepared by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Gandhinagar.
What is the Purpose and objectives?
- It aims to offer a meaningful, unique, and inspiring experience to all participants, thereby empowering them with leadership qualities.
- It will inspire the youth and foster respect for Bharat’s unity in diversity, embodying the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”
- It will contribute by making the youth of today, a flame holder for Viksit Bharat.

Nritya Kalanidhi Award
News: Classical dancer and choreographer Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari was presented with the ‘Nritya Kalanidhi’ award at the 17th Dance Festival of The Music Academy.
- The Nritya Kalanidhi Award is presented in the field of dance every year by the Madras Music Academy.
- The Music Academy, Madras is a landmark institution in the history of the fine arts.
- It emerged as an offshoot of the All India Congress Session held in Madras in December 1927.
- It was conceived to be the institution that would set the standard for Carnatic music.
INS Chennai
News: The Indian Navy recently said that it has responded to a hijacking attempt on vessel MV Lila Norfolk by engaging its mission-deployed platforms, including its maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) P8I and INS Chennai.
- Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and constructed guided missile destroyer.
- Third and last ship of the Kolkata-class stealth-guided missile destroyers (Project 15A).
- Constructed by the Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) at Mumbai and commissioned into the Indian Navy on November 21, 2016.
- It is armed with Vertical launch and long-range surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile systems like supersonic BrahMos, ‘Barak-8’ Long Range Surface to Air missiles.
- The ship’s Anti-Submarine Warfare capabilities are provided by the indigenously developed Rocket Launchers and Torpedo Launchers.
