Why in the News?

The Government has launched the SWATI Portal on the International Day For Girls and Women in Science (11th February).

News in Brief

  • Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India launched the “Science for Women-A Technology & Innovation (SWATI)” Portal.
  • It aimed at creating a single online portal representing Indian Women and Girls in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine).
  • The database of the Portal will serve in policy-making to address the challenges of Gender-gap.
  • This is a dynamically growing portal and the endeavour is to have data of all women scientists of the country included.
  • Need for the portal: Women constitute, 50% of human resources, which is vital for the progress of society.
  • It is important to educate more women especially in the field of science& technology.
About SWATI Portal

Science for Women-A Technology & Innovation (SWATI)” Portal is aimed at creating a single online portal representing Indian Women and Girls in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine).

  • Development of the portal was assigned to the NIPGR HRD Cell and it was termed the “SWATI” portal (Science for Women: A Technology and Innovation Portal).
  • The portal is intended to serve as a Gateway to view the Expertise and Contributions of Indian Women in Science, specially to mark the 75th year of Indian Independence, in celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
  • In 2022, the  portal was adopted for expansion by the IAP (Inter Academy Panel) of the Indian science academies to cover all Indian women in STEM.
Data collection process
  • NIPGR HR Cell began with information from Indian women researchers funded by the DBT, including PIs, post-docs and students.
  • data is being collected for Indian lady students of colleges and universities, graduate research scholars, post-doctoral researchers, administrative staff, scientists, science communicators and academic faculty.
