Why in the News?

Department of Social Welfare, in collaboration with line departments and stakeholders, will organise Swastha Balak Balika Spardha or Healthy Child Competition.

About Swasth Balak Spardha Abhiyaan

  • It is a nationwide weight and height measurement campaign.
  • Aims to promote the value of nutrition and good health of children below six years.
  • Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit their nearest Anganwadi centre, hospitals, health centres or any designated locations to know their child’s nutritional status by measuring their weight and height.
  • A healthy child certificate will be issued by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development to all healthy children.
Objectives

Swastha Balak Spardha is proposed to be conducted with the following objectives

  • To bring focus on the “Swastha Balak- Healthy Child”
  • To identify healthy children in the age groups of 6m-3 years and 3-5 years
  • To generate awareness and conduct campaigns for growth measurement of children under 5 years
  • To generate a spirit of competitiveness for good health and nutrition
  • To promote Breastfeeding and Complementary feeding practices
  • To promote counselling regarding the importance of diet diversity and age-appropriate feeding
  • To promote the concept of peer educator (mother-to-mother/ family/community).
Who are the target Group?
  • Primary Beneficiary: Children (6m-3 years and 3-5 years)
  • Secondary: Caregivers (Parents, Other Family Members, Other local persons)
Recognition
  • Ranking of children – 1st, 2nd and 3rd
  • Distribution of Certificates to the Winning Child and Parent (especially mothers, to encourage the spirit of positive competition) and rewards like indigenous toys, hygiene kits, water bottles, fruit baskets etc.
  • Small gifts like nutrition kits/ hygiene kits to all participating children
  • Locally available indigenous toys may be used to felicitate the children.
