Why in the News?
The India-Japan fifth joint military exercise ‘Dharma Guardian’ concluded at the Mahajan Field Firing Range in Rajasthan.
About Exercise Dharma Guardian
- Dharma Guardian is an annual joint military exercise between the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self Defence Force (JGSDF).
- The exercise is designed to strengthen the capabilities of both armies in counter-terrorism and disaster response scenarios.
- The exercise began in 2018 and takes place annually, alternately conducted in India and Japan.
- Each exercise involves a contingent of 40 personnel on each side.
- The Japanese contingent is represented by troops from the 34th Infantry Regiment, while the Rajputana Rifles battalion represents the Indian Army contingent.
Need for Exercise
- Decided based on the nature and requirement of specific exercise.
- Expenditure incurred also varies
- Helps in constructive engagements in operational terms and enhances the skills of our armed forces.
- This is a continuous process relevant steps are taken from time to time to engage friendly countries and to enhance the scope of exercises based on the principle of mutual benefit and our strategic requirements.
