Why in the News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the Pradhan Mantri Samajik Utthan and Rozgar Adharit Jankalyan (PM-SURAJ) national portal and sanctioned credit support to one lakh entrepreneurs of disadvantaged sections.

News in Brief

  • Prime Minister will interact with beneficiaries of various government schemes from disadvantaged groups, including Scheduled Castes, Backward Classes, and sanitation workers.
  • also distribute Ayushman Health Cards and PPE kits to Safai Mitras (Sewer and Septic tank workers) under the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE).
  • This is a step towards safeguarding the health and safety of frontline workers who serve in challenging conditions.

  • This initiative is set to facilitate financial empowerment and enable entrepreneurship opportunities for the most disadvantaged sections of society.
  • The credit support will be provided to eligible persons across the country, facilitated through banks, NBFC-MFIs, and other organisations.
Major scheme for disadvantaged section

Who are the disadvantaged sections?
  • Disabled People, both physically and mentally, are unable to do tasks as other people can
  • Socially backward, such as women, migrants, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and nomadic tribes.
  • Financially or economically disadvantaged individuals such as residents of slums, temporary labourers, and those living in poverty.
  • Elderly People are those who are being neglected by their families and society.
  • Linguistic minority also falls in this group.
  • Educationally backward people.
  • Religious Minority groups and Subcaste

  • Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY)
  • National Fellowship for OBC Students (NF-OBC)
  • Educational Loans provided by NBCFDC
  • National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students
  • Entrepreneurial Schemes of NBCFDC
  • Credit Enhancement Guarantee Scheme for the Scheduled Castes (SCs)
  • National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE)
  • Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNTs (SEED)
  • Pradhan Mantri Anusuchit Jaati Abhyuday Yojna (PM-AJAY)
  • Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise (SMILE)
  • Scheme For Residential Education For Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA)
