World Population Day, is observed annually on July 11.
Understanding World Population Day
- Aims to raise awareness about global population issues.
- Established by the United Nations in 1989, it commemorates the “Day of Five Billion” when the world’s population surpassed five billion.
- This year’s theme emphasizes inclusive data collection to ensure fair representation in population counts, regardless of background, nationality, geography, or socioeconomic standing.
Why Data Matters
- Inclusive Data: Accurate population data is essential for informed decision-making. It helps tailor solutions and drive progress.
- Marginalized Communities: Despite advancements, marginalized communities remain underrepresented in data. This affects their well-being and rights.
- Human Diversity: Our rich human tapestry is only as strong as its weakest thread. When data systems work for everyone, they accelerate progress for all.
World Population Trends
- The global population reached seven billion in 2011.
- It stands at almost 7.9 billion in 2021.
- Projections estimate 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion by 2050, and 10.9 billion by 21002.

- As of 2024, India’s population stands at approximately 1.43 billion people.
- From 1960 to 2023, India’s population increased from 450.55 million to 1.43 billion, representing a remarkable growth of 216.5% in 63 years2.
- The annual population growth rate has varied over time. For instance, in 1974, it reached 2.36%, while in 2023, it was 0.61%2.
Future Projections
- By 2050, India’s population is estimated to reach around 1.7 billion3.
- In recent years, the growth rate has slowed down, but India remains one of the most populous countries globally.
