Understanding World Population Day

  • Aims to raise awareness about global population issues.
  • Established by the United Nations in 1989, it commemorates the “Day of Five Billion” when the world’s population surpassed five billion.
  • This year’s theme emphasizes inclusive data collection to ensure fair representation in population counts, regardless of background, nationality, geography, or socioeconomic standing.
Why Data Matters

  • Inclusive Data: Accurate population data is essential for informed decision-making. It helps tailor solutions and drive progress.
  • Marginalized Communities: Despite advancements, marginalized communities remain underrepresented in data. This affects their well-being and rights.
  • Human Diversity: Our rich human tapestry is only as strong as its weakest thread. When data systems work for everyone, they accelerate progress for all.
