The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has released the Global Peace Index, 2025.

News in Brief

  • Global Peace Index 2025 rankings list: Amid rising geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
  • The average level of global peacefulness has deteriorated by 0.36 per cent, according to the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2025 released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP).
  • The findings show a concerning global trend: the world is becoming less peaceful, with increased instability driven by factors that often precede major conflicts.
  • The report states that deterioration in peacefulness is now at its highest level since the end of World War II.
About Global Peace Index

  • Publication: This index has been published by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) since 2007.
  • This index ranks 163 independent countries and territories based on their peace level, which covers 99.7% of the world’s population.
  • It measures the level of peace in three main areas through 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators
    • Social security and safety
    • Intensity of domestic and international conflict
    • State of militarisation
Key Findings

  • A decline of 0.36% has been recorded in global peace, which is considered to be the biggest decline since the Second World War.
  • 74 countries have improved while 87 countries have declined. This indicates that global instability is constantly increasing.
  • Countries’ scores have declined by an average of 5.4% over the last 17 years, indicating a steady decline in global peacefulness since 2008.
  • Peace inequality has increased by 11.7% over 20 years.

Concerns Raised

  • The continuation of the Russia-Ukraine war has raised concerns across the European has affected the peace of the region.
  • The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remain the most unstable region for the tenth year.
  • Around the globe, expenditure on peacebuilding $47.2 billion in 2024, which is only 0.52% of global military expenditure and has declined by 26% since 2008.
  • Internationalized internal conflicts: Increased by 175% since 2010. 78 countries were involved in external wars in 2023.

  • Improvement: 0.58% improvement over the previous year
