Why in the News?
The Ministry of Home Affairs notified changes in the Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025.
News in Brief
- The Union Home Ministry made it mandatory for foreigners coming to India on a visa for 180 days or less to register themselves at any time before the expiry of the said period, if they want to extend their visit.
- Each stay shall not exceed 180 days.
- Replaces the previous rule: registration should be done within 14 days after the expiry of 180 days of arrival in India.
Key changes in Immigration and Foreigners Rules 2025
- Foreign nationals who want to extend their stay beyond the stipulated period of 180 days must now register for extension at any time before its expiry.
- Registration for the extension of the period of 180 days is granted only in emergent circumstances.
- Relief to children born to either or both foreign parents.
- Earlier, parents were required to inform the registration authorities within 30 days of the birth of a child to avail visa-related services.
- The amended rules exempt cases where either of the parents is an Indian citizen and wants to retain the children’s Indian citizenship.
- Later, if the child acquires citizenship of a foreign country while in India, either of the parents must inform the authorities within 30 days of acquiring the foreign citizenship.
