Why in the News?
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered INS Mangrol to the Indian Navy on 21 August 2026.
About INS Mangrol
- Type: Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC).
- Builder: Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi.
- Role: Primarily designed to detect and counter submarines in shallow coastal waters.
- Also capable of underwater surveillance, Search & Rescue, Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO) and mine warfare.
- Length: Approximately 78 m.
- Displacement: About 900 tonnes.
- Maximum speed: Around 25 knots.
- Propulsion: Diesel engine–waterjet system.
- Equipped with lightweight torpedoes, indigenous anti-submarine rockets, shallow-water sonars and advanced radars.
- Contains over 80% indigenous content, reflecting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat approach.
Name & Class
The vessel is named after Mangrol, a coastal town and minor port in Junagadh district, Gujarat, known for marine fishing. It also carries forward the name of an earlier INS Mangrol, a naval minesweeper that served until 2004.
