Why in News ?

The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) director-general suggested that racism is behind a lack of international attention and interest in Ethiopia’s war-stricken northern Tigray region, where millions of civilians are living in dire conditions.

Key Facts

  • According to director-general Situation in Tigray the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and lack of response from global leaders had to do with the colour of the skin of the people.
  • Racism issues also concerns : Region was not getting the same attention from the world as the conflict in Ukraine was, and suggested that the lack of attention may have to do with race.
  • Humanitarian aid only reached Tigray in June 2021 when Tigrayan forces regained control of the area, after the conflict broke out in Ethiopia in November 2020.

  • The Ethiopian government launched military operations against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the region’s ruling party, in November 2020.
  • Ethiopian federal forces, local militias, and the Eritrean armed forces shelled, plundered, and destroyed civilian buildings in Tigray towns, including hospitals, schools, industries, and businesses.
  • More than two million people were forced to evacuate their homes as a result of the conflict and ongoing limitations on humanitarian access.
  • Also thousands of them crossed into Sudan, leaving at least 2.3 million in need of aid.

Current Situation

  • In 2022, the region’s humanitarian condition had seriously deteriorated made worse by an extended drought.
  • The first COVID-19 vaccination campaign in Tigray was started only in July 2022 of this year at the Mekelle hospital.
  • Besides cold chain maintenance, lack of fuel, limited communication and internet access affecting timely results and reporting also impact the vaccination drive. 
  • United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, food security is expected to worsen in Tigray in the coming months.
