The launching of 5G in selected cities was officially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi during the India Mobile Congress.
What is 5G?
- 5G is the 5th generation mobile network.
- Following 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks, it is a new international wireless standard.
- The goal of 5G wireless technology is to provide more users with:
- Faster multi-Gbps peak data rates, extremely low latency, enhanced reliability, vast network capacity, and a more consistent user experience.
- Works in three bands of the spectrum
- Low Band Spectrum
- Mid-Band Spectrum
- High-Band Spectrum
- It will enable real-time monitoring of disasters, improve precision agriculture, automate hazardous industrial operations like offshore and deep mining.
- 13 cities will host the initial rollout of 5G.
- Airtel has stated that it would begin rolling out 5G today in eight areas.
- Jio wants to introduce 5G in a few towns before bringing it to the entire nation by 2023.
- The launch date for Vodafone-5G Idea’s ambitions has not yet been established.
- As providers like Airtel have remarked, it will be 2024 before there is full 5G coverage.
- This milestone with high-tech technology and paves the way to bring transformation in crucial areas including agriculture, health, education, Transport, logistics, smart cities, Industry 4.0 and financial inclusion etc.
Key Highlights of the India Mobile Congress
- It is organized with the theme “New digital Universe”.
- Inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi.
- Asia’s leading technology exhibition, with the theme “Encapsulate, Engage and Experience a New Digital Universe” at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
- to address the challenges in areas of commerce, healthcare, education, communication and financial inclusion.
- During the event, unique and new opportunities will be showcased for the speedy adoption and spread of digital technology.
- It is a major networking event in India’s technology sector.
- The event acts as the largest TMT forum in Asia.
- IMC has been actively promoting India’s strength and position as a global hub for manufacturing technology products.
- It is further highlighting the role of start-ups, small-scale industries in the new digital universe to deliver best in class service, equipment and applications.
What are the challenges in 5G?
- Lack of flow of cash and adequate capital with the Telcos.
- Still many rural regions still dont have the access of 4G.

Why in News ?
United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons (resolution 45/106).
Key Facts
- This was preceded by programmes like the Vienna International Plan of Action on Aging, which was approved by the UN General
Assembly and the World Assembly on Ageing in 1982.
- The United Nations Principles for Older Persons were approved by the General Assembly in 1991 (resolution 46/91).
- The Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging was approved in 2002 by the Second World Assembly on Aging in order to address the opportunities and difficulties presented by the population’s ageing in the twenty-first century and to advance the creation of a society for all ages.
- The average lifespan in the world in 2021 was 72.81 years, up 0.24 percent from 2020.
Elder persons around the world
- The region of Eastern and South-Eastern Asia was home to the largest number of older persons (261 million), followed by Europe and Northern America (over 200 million).
- Over the next three decades, the number of older persons worldwide is projected to more than double, reaching more than 1.5 billion persons in 2050.
- The largest increase (312 million) is projected to occur in Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, growing from 261 million in 2019 to 573 million in 2050.
- The fastest increase in the number of older persons is expected in Northern Africa and Western Asia.
- The second fastest increase is projected for sub-Saharan Africa, where the population aged 65 or over could grow from 32 million in 2019 to 101 million in 2050 (218 per cent).
About International Day for Older Persons
- 2022 Theme:Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.
- The NGO Committees on Aging in New York, Geneva, and Vienna will each commemorate this theme in their own special and complimentary ways.
Objectives of UNIDOP2022
- To draw attention to elder women’s fortitude in the face of enduring social, economic, and environmental injustices.
- To increase understanding of the significance of enhanced global data collecting that is broken down by age and gender.
- To call on member states, UN entities, UN Women, and civil society to include older women in the center of all policies, ensuring gender equality as described in the Secretary-General’s report, Our Common Agenda.
