Why in News ?

Network Planning Group (NPG) constituted under the institutional framework of PM GatiShakti has recommended 3 important road connectivity projects.

Key Facts

  • Construction of Four Lane Highway from Gazipur – Ballia – UP/Bihar State Border, Improvement and Up-gradation of Existing Road from 2-Lane to 4–lane in Uttar Pradesh and Moradabad & Kashipur bypasses in UP, Uttarakhand.
  • All 3 projects are important for the improvement and upgradation of the roadways with a view of multimodality, easier commute, and land acquisition.
  • The members of the Network Planning Group have further suggested certain components of integrated planning and synchronized implementation concepts and have ensured faster clearance and support for the projects.
About PM GatiShakti

  • Also known as the National Master Plan for Multi-Modal Connectivity.

  • It was established by the Indian government with the goal of coordinating the design and implementation of infrastructure projects in order to reduce logistics costs.
  • Gati Shakti scheme absorbed the 2019-launched National Infrastructure Pipeline, which cost Rs 110 lakh crore.
  • In addition, it plans to create two new defence corridors, one in Tamil Nadu and the other in Uttar Pradesh, and 11 industrial corridors.
  • The plan also aimed to speed up turnaround times at ports and increase cargo handling capacity to increase trade.
Network Planning Group (NPG)

  • It was chaired by the Special Secretary, Logistics Division, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and saw active participation from member ministries/departments including MoRTH, MoCA, MoR, MoPSW, MoP, DoT and Niti Ayog.
  • NPG consists of heads of the network planning wing of respective infrastructure ministries and it will assist the Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGOS), which is headed by the cabinet secretary.
  • EGOS consists of secretaries of 18 ministries as members and Head of Logistics Division, under the DPIIT, as member convenor.
  • NPG will clear the projects as all infrastructure projects would have to come here.
