  • Law and Order: The ministry plays a significant role in maintaining law and order, particularly during situations such as protests, strikes, and public unrest. It can provide advisory assistance and central forces to states as required.
  • Border Management: The MHA oversees the management of India’s international borders, working closely with border guarding forces like the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to secure the borders and prevent unauthorized activities.
  • Emergency Response and Disaster Management: The ministry is involved in disaster management and response through agencies like the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
  • Foreigners and Citizenship Issues: Matters related to foreigners, citizenship, visas, and entry/exit policies fall under the purview of the MHA.
  • Police Modernization: The MHA works towards modernizing and strengthening the police forces across states, ensuring they have the necessary training, equipment, and resources to maintain law and order effectively.
  • Counter-Terrorism: The ministry collaborates with various security agencies to counter terrorist activities and manage internal security threats.
  • Cybersecurity: In recent years, the MHA has taken steps to enhance cybersecurity and protect critical infrastructure from cyber threats.
  • Union Territories Administration: The MHA is responsible for the administration of Union Territories in India.
  • Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs): The CAPFs, as discussed earlier, operate under the MHA. The ministry oversees their deployment and various operational aspects.

The Minister of Home Affairs is the head of the ministry, and the ministry is supported by several departments and organizations that cater to different aspects of its responsibilities. Overall, the Ministry of Home Affairs plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, security, and stability of the nation’s internal affairs.
