Why in the News?
Supreme Court (SC) of India initiated suo moto proceedings over the growing menace of stray dog attacks and the resulting fatalities, flagging the situation as alarming and disturbing.
News in Brief
- The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of a news item titled City hounded by strays and kids pay price published in the news.
- It has registered a writ petition taking cognisance of how infants, children and the aged are falling prey to rabies disease because of unvaccinated stray dogs.
- There are reports of hundreds of dog bite incidents from both cities and peripheral areas, many of which have led to rabies infections.
- Ultimately, it is infants and senior citizens who are falling prey to this deadly disease.

- The court’s the power to initiate legal proceedings on its own, without a formal petition being filed.
- The court can take up matters of public interest or concern.
- It can take action based on Information from media reports, letters, or other sources, even if no one brings a formal case before them.
- Courts are required to adjudicate adversarial litigation, when one party raises a dispute against the other.
