Why in News ?
Time Use Survey (TUS) provides a framework for measuring time dispositions by the population on different activities.
- It is an important source of information about the activities that are performed by the population and the time duration for which such activities are performed.
Time Use Survey (TUS)
- Objective of Time Use Survey (TUS) is to measure participation of men and women in paid and unpaid activities.
- TUS is an important source of information on the time spent in unpaid caregiving activities, volunteer work, unpaid domestic service producing activities of the household members.
- It also provides information on time spent on learning, socializing, leisure activities, self-care activities, etc., by the household members.
- How it differ from other activity ?
- Feature of Time Use Survey from other household surveys is that it can capture time disposition on different aspects of human activities, be it paid, unpaid or other activities.
- Also provides information on time spent on learning, socializing, leisure activities, self-care activities, etc., by the household members.
Features of the Survey
- Coverage
- This survey covered 1,38,799 households (rural: 82,897 and urban: 55,902).
- Each member of age 6 years and above of the selected households.
- Data collection
- In this survey data on time use was collected through personal interview method.
- Presentation of the estimates
- The results have been presented here considering all the activities in the time slots instead of considering only the major activity.
Findings of the Survey
- Employment and related activities
- 38.2 percentage from urban and rural areas engaged in Employment and related activities.
- 57.03 % male and 18.4 % female.
- This constituted for 463 mins in time.
- Production of goods for own final use
- 17.1 % engaged in Production of goods for own final use.
- A total of 151 Mins time engaged in this activity.
- Unpaid domestic services for household members
- 53.2% engaged in Unpaid domestic services for household members.
- In time it is 248 mins.
- Culture, leisure, mass-media and sports practices
- 86.9 % engaged in Culture, leisure, mass-media and sports practices.
- It constituted for 165 mins of day.
- Self-care and maintenance
- 100 % engaged in this activity.
- Percentage share of total time in Self-care and maintenance is 50.4

Amnesty International Halts Operations India
Why in News ?
Amnesty International India the government had frozen all its bank accounts, leading to all of its work in the country coming to a halt.
Amnesty International
- It is a non-governmental organisation focused on human rights.
- Objective of the organisation is to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.
- For its campaign against torture awarded the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize.
- Amnesty International is financed largely by fees and donations from its worldwide membership.
Why it halt Operations ?
- The government case against Amnesty India broadly rests on two investigations, one alleging discrepancies under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, and another case that was registered by the CBI alleging violations under the FCRA.
- Complete freezing of Amnesty International India’s bank accounts by the Government of India.
- It raised funds domestically and around 1 lakh Indians had contributed financially in the past eight years.
- In 2016 also a first information report (FIR) against Amnesty India for being anti-national.
