Why in News ?
Prime Minister greeted wildlife lovers especially those who are passionate about tiger conservation on International Tiger Day.
Key Facts
- Home to over 70% of the tiger population globally, we reiterate our commitment to ensuring safe habitats for our tigers and nurturing tiger-friendly eco-systems.
- Also called as Global Tiger Day.
- An annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation, held annually on 29 July.
- Started in 2010 in Russia during the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit.
- The global goal to double the number of wild tigers by the year 2022.
- The day aims to promote the global system for protecting the natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness and support for tiger conservation issues.
- There are currently 13 tiger range countries – India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Vietnam.
Tiger conservation in India
- India’s Project Tiger was launched in 1973 with 9 tiger reserves.
- India is home to over half of the world’s wild tigers – an estimated 2,226.
- India is home to 51 tiger reserves spread across 18 states.

- Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of tigers followed by Karnataka and Uttarakhand.
- Corbett Tiger Reserve (Uttrakhand) had the largest population of tigers acccording to the 2018 census.
- What are the major concerns ?
- Even poaching reduce to a significant level there are some evidence of poaching, still a threat.
- The area under the protection is not sufficient as thE increase of tiger population since the introduction of program.
- Declined tiger population in northeast and Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha are a matter of concern.
