Why in News ?

The 8th Edition of joint military exercise between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army, Exercise MITRA SHAKTI was conducted from 04 – 16 October 2021. 

Key Facts

  • Exercise Mitra Shakti, based on counter insurgency and counter terrorism operations in semi urban terrain is the largest bilateral exercise being undertaken by the Sri Lankan Army.
  • It forms a major part of India and Sri Lanka’s growing defense partnership.
  • Besides promoting synergy and inter-operability amongst the Armed Forces, Exercise Mitra Shakti further helped in cementing ties between both the Nations.

What is the need of Joint Exercise ?

  • Aim : Measure to test the performance of the armed forces without engaging in the battlefield.

  • Better coordination between the militaries, observation of enemy’s tactics, and familiarization with new technologies, enabling on-the-job training of each other’s crews and share useful experiences of counter-terrorism operations .
  • Besides it is a strategic signal for a third country to  show case its military influence with other nations and region. 
  • Enhance the brotherhood between the participating nations.
  • Also exercise increases the partnership between among the countries. 
  • These exercises also act as a platform to assess weapons, equipment and a display of technology that can be made available to allies.
  • Exercises are also seen as an assurance that a critical supply of spares and accessories will be guaranteed during a possible conflict.
  • Significance for India
    • Indian Armed Forces carry out military exercises with different countries across the year.
    • India has undertaken
      • army joint exercises with 18 countries
      • Naval exercises with 14 countries
      • Air force exercises with eight countries
    • Purpose ranges from inter-operability to demonstration of capabilities, developing trust, comradery and familiarity between militaries.
