Why in News ?

The Secretary of the Security Council of the Kyrgyz Republic visited India for the first Strategic Dialogue between the National Security Council Secretariats.

  • The strategic dialogue with Kyrgyzstan was held days ahead of India hosting a meeting of national security advisers (NSAs) of countries in the region, including Pakistan and China, to discuss the situation in Afghanistan.
Key Facts

  • The two sides held discussions on threats and challenges facing both countries as well as the regional security environment, with special reference to Afghanistan.
  • The two sides welcomed the similarity of views on these matters.
  • Also agreed upon steps to enhance bilateral security cooperation between the relevant bodies, including in the fields of counter-terrorism, combating radicalisation, narcotics control and defense cooperation.
India-Kyrgyzstan Relations

  • Since the independence of Kyrgyz Republic on 31 August 1991 India was among the first to establish diplomatic relations in 1992 with the resident Mission of India was set up in 1994.
  • India-Kyrgyz trade was US$38.53 million in 2014–15.
  • India’s exports to Kyrgyzstan was US$37.76 million whereas Kyrgyz exports to India was US$0.77 million.
  • In 1995, India had extended a US$5 million line of credit to Kyrgyzstan a post independence aid.
  • 16,000 Indian students are studying medicine in various medical institutions across the country.
  • Leaderships of Kyrgyz have been supportive of India’s stand on Kashmir.
  • They have also welcomed the ongoing peace process.
  • Important agreements are Trade & Economic Cooperation, Investment Promotion & Protection, Civil Aviation, Avoidance of Double Taxation.
  • It also supported India’s bid for permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council as well as full membership in Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
  • Both nations share common concerns like threat of terrorism, drug-trafficking, and extremism. 
  • India shares close relations with Central Asia, especially with the countries that were part of ancient Silk Route, including Kyrgyzstan.
