Why in News ?

Reports have surfaced online of instances where block level officers have asked individuals to link their Aadhaar with their Voter IDs, failing which their Voter IDs could be cancelled.

Key Facts

  • Election Commission of India has started a drive to link Aadhaar with voter IDs in order to weed out duplicates in the electoral rolls.
  • Initially process would be voluntary, but in recent weeks, several voters have received calls from election officials telling them it was compulsory to link the two.
  • The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, which authorises voter ID link with Aadhaar was passed by the Lok Sabha through a voice vote in December 2021.
  • Aims to help in creating clean and transparent photo-based electoral rolls also to remove all duplications in the electoral rolls.

How to Link Voter ID with Aadhaar?

  • By filling the Form-6B online on the voters portal or app- nvsp.in.
  • Self authenticate Aadhaar by entering OTP received on registered mobile number.
  • Or by downloading and install Voter Helpline App either from Google Play Store (Android users) or App store (iPhone users).

What happen if not linked?

  • The name of the elector will not be deleted from the electoral roll if the voter does not link voter ID with Aadhaar.
  • The Aadhaar Voter ID linkage is voluntary as no special notification came from the authority.

What are the Objection against the linking?

  • This action would violate the fundamental right to privacy, according to the Opposition.
  • The estimate of error rates in biometric-based authentication differs widely.
