Why in news?

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) just declared that it has successfully demonstrated the new technology with Inflatable Aerodynamic Decelerator (IAD).

Key Facts

  • IAD is a method applied to a payload for atmospheric entry.
  • The inflatable aerodynamic decelerator is composed of an inflated envelope and an inflatant.
  • It decelerates the lander as it inflates like a balloon as it enters the atmosphere.
  • The inflatant is made to fill the inflatable envelope to the point where it surrounds the payload intended to enter a planet’s or satellite’s atmosphere and creates aerodynamic forces that slow it down.
  • IAD is intended to enhance drag as soon as a spacecraft enters the atmosphere of any planetary body, including Earth, Mars, or even the Moon.
  • A closed, gas-pressured body keeps it in shape, and the inflatant gas is also produced internally.
  • In certain variations, ram air or both are used.
  • Supersonic and hypersonic versions of the technology have previously undergone successful testing by some space agencies, including NASA.
  • The IAD will help ISRO in performing many space tasks effectively including recovery of spent stages of rockets, for landing payloads on missions to other planetary bodies.
