Why in News ?

President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu virtually launched the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan today (September 9, 2022).

Key Facts

  • It is because TB causes the largest number of deaths among all other infectious diseases in our country.
  • India has a little less than 20 percent of the world’s population, but has more than 25 percent of the total TB patients of the world.
  • Most of the people affected by TB come from the poor section of society.
  • Its treatment is effective and accessible and the government provides a free of cost facility for prevention and treatment of this disease.
  • According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, all nations have set the goal of eradicating TB by the year 2030.
Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan

It has been envisioned to bring together all community stakeholders to support those on TB treatment and accelerate the country’s progress towards TB elimination.

Scope of The Initiative

  • The Ni-kshay Mitra shall provide additional support to all the on-treatment TB patients who have given consent for support, in the selected health facilities /blocks/urban wards/districts/states.
  • Only individual Ni-kshay Mitra can choose patients from a given health facility.
  • The other Ni-kshay Mitras have to choose the entire geographical unit (blocks/urban wards/districts/states).
  • The type of additional assistance that may be provided by the Ni-kshay Mitra to on-treatment TB
    patients who have given consent for support shall include the following:

a. Nutritional support
b. Additional investigations for the diagnosed TB patients
c. Vocational support
d. Additional nutritional supplements

  • The minimum period of commitment for providing additional support to the TB patient shall be one year. 

Expected Output of The Initiative

  • This initiative will increase the active involvement of society in the fight against tuberculosis.
  • This activity aims at increasing awareness among the public regarding tuberculosis.
  • Involvement of the community in supporting the treatment cascade shall also help in the reduction of stigma.
  • Provision of additional support to the TB patient shall also result in the reduction of the out-of-pocket expenditure for the family of the TB patient.
  • Ultimately improved nutrition for the TB patient shall result in better treatment outcomes.

Operational Plan for the Initiative

  • Preparation of the health system in the states and districts about the initiative including Ayushman Bharat – Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs).
  • Dissemination plan for the initiative.
  • Nation-wide drive for obtaining consent from TB patients.
  • Identification of Ni-kshay Mitra & registration of willingness to support TB patients.
  • Needs assessment of the blocks/urban wards /districts/states.
  • Delivery of services/support to the beneficiary.
  • Reporting on Ni-kshay portal.
  • Grievance redressal.

About Tuberculosis (TB)

  • Tuberculosis is a potentially serious infectious bacterial disease that mainly affects the lungs.
  • How it Spread ? : The bacteria that cause TB are spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms

Most people infected with the bacteria that cause tuberculosis don’t have symptoms.

    • When symptoms occur, they usually include
      • Cough
      • Weight loss
      • Night sweats
      • Fever.

Treatment

    • Treatment isn’t always required for those without symptoms.
    • Patients with active symptoms will require a long course of treatment involving multiple antibiotics.
  • TB is a major public health challenge in the South-East Asia (SEA) Region of WHO.
  • Over 43% of the global TB incidence and half the TB associated mortality is from SEA Region.
  • Six of 11 countries in the Region are on the high TB burden country list.
