Key Facts
- When the fuel it used to move ran out, it was unable to avoid an eclipse that lasted for more than seven hours.
- Its batteries were made to last during a less than two-hour eclipse.
- The craft’s batteries were therefore low enough to allow it to resume when it finally came out of the eclipse.
- Eight years after the start of its intended six-month mission, it eventually appears to have ran out of fuel.
What is Mangalyaan Mission?
- The mission, known as the Mars Orbiter Mission, or MOM, was initially launched in 5 November 2013 India’s first interplanetary mission.
- It was successfully launched from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
- The PSLV-C25 launched the Rs 450 billion Mars Orbiter Mission.
- It entered an orbit around Mars in 2014.
- The mission spent eight years collecting data to send back to Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
- Significant scientific knowledge on Martian surface features, morphology, as well as the Martian atmosphere and exosphere, has been gained.
NASA’s Mariner 4 was the first craft to finally reach Mars. USSR’S Mars 3 landed successfully in 1971 but failed shortly thereafter. India the first Asian country and the fourth in the world.
Mangalyaan Details
- 850 kg of fuel and 5 science payloads including a Mars Color Camera (MCC).
- Thermal Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (TIS), Methane Sensor for Mars (MSM), Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) and Lyman Alpha Photometer (LAP) are other instruments.
What was the purpose of the Mission?
- Studying the Martian atmosphere.
- To create the technology needed for an interplanetary expedition’s design, planning, management, and operation.
What next?
- One of the first nations to successfully launch a spaceship into the Mars system on its first attempt was India.
- Future MOM-2 was released by ISRO in 2016, although the current priority list includes Gaganyaan, Chandrayaan-3, and Aditya-L1.
