Why in News?
Union Environment Ministry on Thursday withdrew permission for tourism and eco-tourism activities in the vicinity of the Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary, Jharkhand. This followed a meeting of Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav with members of the Jain community here.

What is the issue?
- Over the last several days, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has received numerous representations from various groups representing the Jain Samaj.
- Regarding the problems relating to specific events occurring at Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary that have harmed the feelings of Jain Dharma adherents.
- The faulty implementation of provisions of the notification of Eco Sensitive Zone of Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary by Govt of Jharkhand.
What Govt of Jharkhand Proposal?
- Jharkhand Government to develop the Parasnath Hills in Jharkhand as an eco-tourism site where the location is of significant religious importance to Jains.
- The Centre declared the area as an eco-sensitive zone in 2019.
- Using the provision Clause 3 of the Act, are allowed to promote tourism provided a master plan specifying the permissible activities is given to the Centre by the State government.
Centre Response
- State Government of Jharkhand has been directed to strictly comply with these provisions.
- The state government has also been directed to strictly enforce the ban on the sale and consumption of liquor and non-vegetarian food items on Parasnath hill.
- Clause 3 of the said Eco Sensitive Zone notification is stayed forthwith, including amongst others all Tourism and Eco-Tourism activities.
- The State Government is directed to immediately take all steps necessary to ensure the same.
Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary
- Wildlife sanctuary with an area of 49.33 Sq. Km. is very rich in wild fauna and comprises mixed deciduous forests with very high incidence of climbers in Jharkhand.
- The localized dampness have a growth of plenty of lichens, mosses and ferns.
- Fauna in this region comprises Leopard, Sloth Bear, Sambhar, Nilgai, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Langur, Monkey, Mongoose, Jungle cat, Porcupine, Hyaena etc. in addition to varieties of birds and reptiles.
