Why in News ?
Researchers have identified species called Sturisoma reisi, adding to the rich biodiversity found in the Madeira River basin in Bolivia and Brazil.
Key Facts
- Sturisoma is a genus of Neotropical freshwater armored catfishes belonging to the subfamily Loricariinae.
- The species has smaller anterior abdomen plates as well as a middorsal longitudinal black stripe on the caudal peduncle.
- A dark brown stripe is also seen from the first predorsal plate to a location close to the start of the dorsal fin.
- The growth of small dermal teeth on the sides of the skull is seen in sexually mature males of the new species.
- These distinctive characteristics help distinguish Sturisoma reisi from other species.
- There have been 18 locations where the species has been discovered, with 17 being in Brazilian territory and one being in Bolivian territory.
- Sturisoma species are distributed entirely in cis-Andean rivers, and its richness is higher along the Amazonas River basin
Conservation status – IUCN
- Following the recommendations by the IUCN, the fish should be categorized as Least Concern.
- The identification of a new species for this region shows how underestimated, and poorly studied, the richness within Sturisoma is.
