Why in News?

Through cooperation between the International Energy Agency (IEA), International Renewable Energy Agency, United Nations Statistics Division, World Bank, and WHO, a recent study titled “Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress Report 2023” was made public.

Highlights of the Report

  • High inflation, an unclear macroeconomic outlook, debt hardship, and constrained financial flows are some of the elements that have caused the globe to veer off course from reaching SDG 7.
  • The study highlights numerous significant economic barriers to SDG 7’s global implementation.
    • Uncertain macroeconomic prospects and high inflation rates
    • Financial turmoil and fluctuating currencies in several nations
    • Financial constraints and snags in the supply chain
    • Tighter financial conditions and rising commodity prices
  • Access to Electricity and Clean Cooking: Global access to electricity increased from 84% to 91% between 2010 and 2021, but annual growth has slowed.
  • Renewable energy uptake has grown since 2010 but needs substantial scaling up.
  • Financial flows supporting clean energy in developing countries have declined since 2020.
What is Goal 7 of the Sustainable Development Goals?

  • The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to establish a peaceful and prosperous future for both people and the earth, was adopted by all UN Member States in 2015.
  • The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are at the forefront of this agenda and should be supported by all countries regardless of their level of development, serve as a compelling call to action.

Background of the SDGs

  • At the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit in June 1992, Agenda 21, a comprehensive action plan to create a worldwide partnership for sustainable development to enhance human well-being and safeguard the environment, was ratified by more than 178 nations.
  • At the Millennium Summit in September 2000, the Millennium Declaration was unanimously endorsed by all participating nations.
