Why in News ?
During the recent visit of Gen Phan Van Giang, Minister of Defence of Vietnam, to India from 17 – 19 Jun 23, Hon’ble Raksha Mantri had announced gifting of in-service missile corvette INS Kirpan to Vietnam.
News in Brief
- Towards executing the same, INS Kirpan has cast-off today from Visakhapatnam on her final journey from India to Vietnam.
- It is the first-ever instance of India offering a fully operational missile corvette to Vietnam.
- Since its commissioning in 1991, the ship has been an integral part of the Navy’s Eastern Fleet and has participated in several operations.
- It was handed over to VPN with a complete weapon complement.
- The development is significant as growing Chinese influence in the South China sea.
About INS Kirpan
- On January 12, 1991, the Indian Navy commissioned the Khukri class missile corvette INS Kirpan.
- Manned by about 12 officers and 100 sailors, the ship is 90 meters long and 10.45 meters in width with a maximum displacement of 1450 tons.
- It was equipped with Diesel Engines assembled in India.
- Around 65% of the ship contains indigenous parts.
- Speed more than 25 knots.
- It has coastal and offshore patrol, surface warfare, coastal security, anti-piracy, and Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations.
