Why in the News?
PM Narendra Modi launched the ₹24,000-crore PM-PVTG Development Mission and Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.
News in Brief
- PM Narendra Modi promised to work on a mission mode to deliver justice to deprived tribals.
- Will repay the debt he owed to them while launching Rs 24,000-crore project for vulnerable tribal groups on the birth anniversary of tribal icon Birsa Munda.
- Apart from PM Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan PM also launched several schemes including ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra.
- It is a nationwide programme aimed at reaching out to citizens who are eligible for various central schemes but have not benefitted so far.
About Pradhan Mantri PVTG Development Mission
- The mission was announced in the 2023-24 Budget.
- On Tribal Pride Day the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda inaugurated the mission in Khunti district on November 15, 2023.
- The mission is budgeted at 24,000 crore.
- The mission is aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of the particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs).
- Saturating PVTG families and habitations with basic facilities such as
- Safe housing
- Clean drinking water and sanitation
- Improved access to education
- Health and nutrition
- Road and telecom connectivity
- Sustainable livelihood opportunities.
- The mission envisages the availability of Rs.15,000 crore from the Development Action Plan for the Scheduled Tribes, for activities to be undertaken in the next three years under the Mission.
Need for Pradhan Mantri PVTG Development Mission
- Field visits have been carried out by Officers of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and its attached office to the PVTG areas.
- As per the report submitted by the Officers, it has been observed that PVTG habitations need a focused approach for improvement in Infrastructure facilities including road and internet connectivity etc.
- There is also a need for strengthening health and Education facilities to improve school rates and livelihood opportunities.
