Public awareness program organized to commemorate International Epilepsy Day.
News in Brief
- On the occasion of International Epilepsy Day, observed annually on the second Monday of February.
- A series of public awareness programs were conducted across various regions to educate and sensitize the public about epilepsy.
- Department through its National Institutes and CRCs organized multiple events on February 12, 2024, to highlight the importance of understanding and supporting individuals with epilepsy.
International Epilepsy Day
- It a joint initiative created by the International Bureau for Epilepsy (IBE) and the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), is a global event celebrated annually on the 2nd Monday of February, to promote awareness on epilepsy right around the world.
- With IBE and ILAE representation in more than 140 countries, this is a powerful opportunity to highlight the problems faced by people with epilepsy, their families and carers, in every region of the world.
Objectives
- Increase public knowledge of the illness as well as government and international awareness.
- Unite epilepsy associations in a global campaign to strengthen the epilepsy movement.
- Increase awareness of epilepsy and promote conversation about it.
- Present a major opportunity for donations to epilepsy groups
About Epilepsy
- Epilepsy, is often misunderstood as a curse.
- The word ‘epilepsy’ is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘to be seized, to be overwhelmed by surprise’.
- To have epilepsy is to have a tendency to have recurring seizures.
- A seizure happens when there is a sudden burst of intense electrical activity in the brain.
- It is a medical condition that can be managed effectively with the right treatment and support.
- Recognizing the need for compassion and proper care, various initiatives were undertaken to dispel myths and promote acceptance.
- It is estimated that more than 50 million people are living with epilepsy around the world.
