Why in the News?
At the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, the Prime Minister of the Republic of India paid an official visit to Croatia on 18 June 2025.
News in Brief
- This marked the first-ever visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Croatia to strengthen the growing momentum of high-level exchanges between the two nations.
- Comprehensive exchange of views on further advancing bilateral relations, India-EU strategic partnership and cooperation in multilateral fora.
- Both agreed that India and Croatia enjoy close and friendly relations, rooted in shared values of democracy, rule of law, pluralism and equality.
Overview of bilateral relations between India-Croatia
- India-Croatia relations have steadily grown since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1992, following Croatia’s independence from the former Yugoslavia.
- Rooted in shared democratic values, cultural affinity, and multilateral cooperation, the bilateral relationship covers political, economic, cultural, and strategic dimensions.
- With Croatia being a member of the European Union (EU) and India focusing on strengthening its presence in Europe, this relationship holds increasing strategic relevance.
Historical Background
- India recognised Croatia as an independent country in May 1992, establishing full diplomatic relations in the same year.
- India opened its Embassy in Zagreb in 1994, while Croatia has an embassy in New Delhi.
- Cultural ties go back further, as Indian philosophy and literature, especially the works of Rabindranath Tagore, have long been studied in Croatia.
- Croatia is also among the few European nations where Indology and Sanskrit studies are part of academic programs.

Political and Strategic Cooperation: High-level visits
- High-level visits have strengthened the relationship:
- President Ram Nath Kovind’s state visit to Croatia in March 2019 was the first-ever visit by an Indian President.
- Croatian officials, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, have made reciprocal visits to India.
- The two countries support a rules-based international order and cooperate in international forums like the United Nations, NAM, and the Commonwealth.
- Croatia has expressed support for India’s permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Economic and Trade Relations
- Bilateral trade between India and Croatia has been growing but remains modest, averaging around USD 270 million annually in recent years.

- Events like the International Day of Yoga are enthusiastically celebrated in Croatia.
- Bollywood films, Indian cuisine, and yoga are popular among Croatian youth.
Indian Diaspora in Croatia
- Approximately 1,500 Indians reside in Croatia, including professionals, students, and entrepreneurs.
- Many are employed in the IT, maritime, and healthcare sectors.
- The diaspora acts as a bridge between the two cultures and helps promote Indian interests in Croatia.
Defence and Technology Cooperation
- Though limited, there is scope for expanding cooperation in defence production, shipbuilding, and cybersecurity.
- Agreements on Science and Technology Cooperation have opened new avenues in research and innovation.
India-Croatia in Multilateral Settings
- As a member of the European Union (since 2013), Croatia plays a role in shaping India-EU relations.
- Croatia supports India’s position on key global issues such as climate change, terrorism, and global governance reforms.
- Collaboration is visible in forums like the UN, WTO, and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
Challenges in Bilateral Relations
- Geographic distance and a relatively small market size limit economic engagement.
- There is a lack of awareness among Indian businesses about the Croatian market.
- Visa and mobility barriers for skilled professionals still exist.
