World Population Day is celebrated every year on July 11 all over the world.
News in Brief
- World Population Day is celebrated annually on 11 July to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues.
- Dramatic growth in the world’s population has been driven by increasing life expectancy and changes in fertility rates alongside trends like increasing urbanization and accelerating migration.
- The UN Development Programme (UNDP) established World Population Day in 1989, an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.
About World Population Day July 11
- In 1990, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) decided to continue observing World Population Day to enhance awareness of population issues, including their relations to the environment and development (Resolution 45/216).
- The Day was first marked on 11 July 1990 in more than 90 countries.
- Global Population (2025): Approximately 8.2 billion people
Objectives
- To increase public awareness about the rate of population growth.
- To spread awareness about family planning, health services, and contraceptive measures.
- Highlight issues such as gender equality, youth empowerment, education, reproductive health and maternal and infant mortality.
- Explain the ill effects of population growth, such as poverty, unemployment and environmental pressure.
- Inspire governments to consider population policy.
