India’s major transboundary rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Sutlej and Indus originate in or pass through territories controlled by China. Concerns over China’s control of hydrological data, construction of dams and lack of a binding water-sharing framework have renewed the debate on India–China river cooperation.

  • The Brahmaputra, known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet, enters India through Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang/Dihang, flows through Assam and then enters Bangladesh.

Sutlej and Indus

  • The Sutlej and Indus also originate in the Tibetan region.

India-China Water Cooperation

  • India and China do not have a comprehensive water-sharing treaty.
