Why in News?
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on October 17 at the curtain raiser ceremony for the 12th edition of DefExpo in Gandhinagar that India has made the transition from being the largest defence importer to an exporter.
Key Highlights
- India will market its military gear to diverse countries at two key conclaves:
- The second edition of the India-Africa Defence Dialogue (IADD)
- The second edition of Indian Ocean Region (IOR)-plus conclave
- The IADD and IOR+ Conclaves will be two crucial events in fostering:
- Regional peace
- Security
- Prosperity
- Defence cooperation
- Forging new defence and industrial alliances
- On the third day of the defence show, October 20, 451 Memorandums of Understanding (MoU), Transfer of Technology agreements, and product debuts are expected, up from 210 at the last DefExpo.
- The government has set an ambitious aim of 1,75,000 crore in manufacturing turnover by 2025, including $5 billion in aerospace and defence products and services exports.
- The administration has outlined a number of steps in this approach.
- The country’s defence exports, which have been increasing year on year in recent years, have surpassed 13,000 crores for 2021-22.
About DefExpo-2022
- The theme of DefExpo 2022 is ‘Path to Pride,’ which corresponds to the Indian government’s aim of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
- For the first time, only Indian exhibitors are permitted to compete in this event.
- Foreign corporations, on the other hand, are invited to have seminars and meetings during the exhibition, including one in which they will be asked to invest in Indian startups and enterprises.
- The event will take place in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, and will include live demonstrations of the Armed Forces’ equipment and expertise, as well as those of Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and commercial businesses.
- It will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the establishment of seven new defence businesses from the former Ordinance Factory Board (OFB).
