Why in News ?
The 39th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy is being conducted from 08 – 19 December 2022.
Key Facts
- The CORPAT will be carried out along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) from December 15 to 16, 2022, and will end with a debrief at Port Blair.
- India and Indonesia have been carrying out CORPATs twice a year since 2002.
- The CORPAT will include INS Karmuk, an indigenously designed Landing Craft Utility vessel, and a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
- The Indonesian team would be represented by KRI Cut Nyak Dien, a Kapitan Pattimura Class Corvette.
What is Aim of Patrol?
- To improve maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Indian Navy has been actively interacting with countries in the region.
- Maintaining the safety and security of this essential section of the IOR for commercial ships, international trade, and the conduct of authorised maritime operations.
- CORPATs aid in the development of understanding and interoperability among fleets, as well as the implementation of measures to prevent and repress illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery, and piracy.
- It also contributes to operational coordination through the exchange of information for the prevention of smuggling, illegal immigration, and the conduct of Search and Rescue (SAR) operations at sea.
India and Indonesia Relation
- India and Indonesia have always had a strong and cordial connection that encompasses a wide range of activities and contacts.
- The 39th edition of IND-INDO CORPAT aims to strengthen maritime cooperation between the two navies while also forging strong friendship relations between India and Indonesia.
- Both nation started diplomatic relation in 1951.

- India and Indonesia can be considered as Neighbouring nations.
- Along the Andaman Sea, India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime boundary with Indonesia.
Maritime Relations
- India’s southernmost territory of Andaman and Nicobar is close to Aceh province of Indonesia which is an important global trade route.
- In 2018 Shared Vision of Maritime Cooperation in the Indo Pacific signed between both nations.
- Garuda Shakti Indian Army Joint Exercises.
- India and Indonesia are also jointly developing Sabang Deep sea Port.
Cultural History
- Ramayana is a major theme in Indonesian dance drama traditions, especially in Java and Bali.
- The Jawaharlal Nehru Indian Cultural Centre was created in Jakarta in 1989 to promote Indian culture in Indonesia.
Economic Relation
- India’s economic ties with Indonesia through its free trade agreement with ASEAN in which Indonesia is a member.
- Indonesia is India’s second largest commercial partner in the ASEAN area, with bilateral trade at around US$ 20 billion in 2019-20.
Indian Community in Indonesia
- Around 100,000 Indonesians of Indian heritage live in Indonesia, especially in Greater Jakarta, Medan, Surabaya, and Bandung.
- There are around 10,000 Indian nationals living in Indonesia.
