Why in the News?
Launched on May 20 last year after a successful 15-day pilot project, the scheme has gained popularity among local artisans and workers.
News in Brief
- As of November 9 this year, 1,134 outlets are operational at 1,037 stations across 27 states.
- Tamil Nadu leads with 146 outlets at 137 stations, West Bengal with a similar number at 123 stations, and Uttar Pradesh in third place with 112 outlets at 105 stations.
- Up to November 9, 39,847 direct beneficiaries have availed opportunities under this scheme.
- Considering five indirect beneficiaries for each allotment, the total beneficiaries amount to 1,43,232.
- The scheme has recorded total sales of Rs 49.58 crore.
About One Station One Product scheme
- The Ministry of Railways has launched the One Station One Product (OSOP) scheme over Indian Railways.
- Objectives to promote the Vocal Local vision of the Government of India.
- It provides a market for local/indigenous products and creates additional income opportunities for the marginalised sections of society.
- Under the scheme, OSOP outlets at railway stations are allotted for showcasing, selling and giving high visibility to indigenous /local products.
- The scheme’s pilot was started on 25.03.2022 and as of 01.05.2023, 728 stations are covered with 785 OSOP outlets in 21 States and 3 Union Territories across the country.
- These OSOP stalls are designed through the National Design Institute for uniformity.
About the products
- ‘One Station One Product’ is specific to that place and includes artefacts made by indigenous tribes, handlooms by local weavers, handicrafts like world-famous wood carving, chikankari and zari-zardozi work on clothes, or spices tea, coffee and other processed/semi-processed food items/products indigenously grown in the area.
- For example in
- North East India, Varieties of Assamese Pitha, Traditional Rajbongshi Dress, Jhapi, Local textiles, and Jute Products (Cap, Gamocha, Doll) are available on OSOP Stalls.
- Jammu & Kashmir area, Kashmiri Girda, Kashmiri Kahwa & Dry Fruits are famous, in South India Cashew products, spices, and Chinnalapatti Handloom Sarees are catching the attention of passengers.
- In the western part of the country, Embroidery & Zari Zardozi, Coconut Halva, locally grown fruits, processed foods, and Bandhani are famous.

Why in the News?
Tamil Nadu will soon replace its decades-old prison manual derived from the jail laws of the British era with a new set of rules that will be guided by the Model Prisons and Correctional Services Act, of 2023.
News in Brief
- According to a letter of the Union Home Secretary sent to all states and Union territories in May but uploaded to the home ministry website the ministry has finalised a progressive and comprehensive Model Prisons Act, 2023
- Aims to replace two pre-independence era laws namely, The Prisons Act of 1894 and The Prisoners Act of 1900.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs assigned the task of revision of the Prisons Act, of 1894 to the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
- The Bureau, after holding wide-ranging discussions with State Prison authorities, correctional experts etc. prepared a draft.
About the Present Prison Act
- The present ‘Prisons Act, of 1894’ is a pre-independence era Act and is almost 130 years old.
- The Act mainly focuses on keeping criminals in custody and enforcement of discipline and order in prisons.
- There is no provision for reform and rehabilitation of prisoners in the existing Act.
Features and focus of the new Model Prisons Act
- Provision for security assessment and segregation of prisoners, individual sentence planning,
- Grievance redressal, prison development board, attitudinal change towards prisoners.
- Provision of separate accommodation for women prisoners, transgender, etc.
- Provision for the use of technology in prison administration to bring transparency to prison administration.
- Provision for video conferencing with courts, scientific and technological interventions in prisons, etc.
- Provision of punishment for prisoners and jail staff for use of prohibited items like mobile phones etc. in jails.
- Provision regarding establishment and management of high-security jails, open jails (open and semi-open), etc.
- Provision for protecting society from the criminal activities of hardened criminals and habitual offenders, etc.
- Provision for legal aid to prisoners, provision of parole, furlough and premature release etc. to incentivise good conduct.
- Focus on vocational training and skill development of prisoners and their reintegration into society.
